During a house call, what can you expect?
Your initial session will commence with a brief interview. I’ll review your medical history, so please prepare copies of any lab and x-ray reports, as well as your physician’s contact information. I’d like to hear about your goals and expectations. Then, I’ll examine you and discuss my diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment options.
In follow-up sessions, you’ll receive comprehensive and ongoing evaluations of your progress. My recommended treatments will depend on your specific needs and may include any or all of the following:
Re-education, or facilitation of movement
Mobilization or manipulation of tissues and joints
Stretching and mobilization of soft tissues
Cardiopulmonary conditioning, and/or
Massage, or application of physical modalities
Please wear comfortable clothing for both the examination and exercises. Each session lasts approximately 45 minutes and concludes with a detailed Personal Exercise Program (PEP). The program is cost-effective and easy to follow independently. Each exercise in the program is a step towards your functional goal. Once you master a particular step, your treatment will progress to the next level. If you have any questions, I’m available by phone or video conferencing between sessions.
Now, let’s delve into why some people recover from brain injuries with better outcomes than others.
Several factors influence recovery, including the extent of the initial injury and the presence of other medical conditions. However, one crucial factor stands out: the healing brain is highly receptive. It requires precise and skilled input to form appropriate synaptic connections. The quality and quantity of therapeutic effort are paramount. The right intervention must reach the right person at the right time—and consistently. Without adequate attention, the synapses will grow along the path of least resistance, leading to compensatory, sub-optimal outcomes.
What’s more crucial: the quantity or quality of training?
Both are important, but in different ways. The right number of repetitions aids in memorizing the movement, while the quality of the movement restores the correct function. The optimal combination of quantity and quality is essential for skill acquisition.
What’s a suitable exercise for my weaker hand?
There’s no such thing as a “good exercise” or “a set of good exercises” for a “typical” weak hand, arm, or leg. Each person presents with unique skills and patterns of acquired impairments and dysfunctions. Therefore, I need to examine your hand to optimize your therapy for the optimal dexterity and strength.
Do you incorporate any holistic therapies into your practice?
Yes, I incorporate elements of Eastern practices when research supports their effectiveness. I personally practice meditation and qi gong daily.
Is Tai Chi better than Yoga as an addition to my physical therapy?
Both may be beneficial. Yoga and qi gong can balance the mind and body, promote relaxation, and aid in healing. You may prefer one style over the other, but the outcome depends on the quality of your instructor’s reasoning. The magic lies not in the tools but in how we use them.
Would you like me to include my testimonial on your website?
Thank you for asking. I don’t include testimonials on my website because I believe they’re of limited value in healthcare services. Healthcare industry marketers often use them to mislead or distract consumers from other important issues. Instead, I prefer to explain my services in person during a free initial consultation.
